Despite their impressive appearance, Giant African Snails are a major pest. The snails can grow to more than 20 centimetres long and enjoy feasting on 500 species of plants. And that's a problem for many Solomon Islanders who grow a lot of food in their gardens.

Giant African Snails, or Lissachatina fulica, were first reported in Solomon Islands in 2006. It's thought they arrived on earth moving or logging equipment which landed without biosecurity clearance and since then authorities have been working hard to eradicate them.

Sam Seke brought this story to Pacific Beat audiences in 2007, after farmers spotted two snails on North Guadalcanal.
