MAZAWIECKI RESIGNED HIS POST IN JULY TO PROTEST THE SERBS' CAPTURE OF THE MUSLIM ENCLAVE OF SREBRENICA, STATING THE U.N.'S FAILURE TO PROTECT ITS OWN DESIGNATED 'SAFE AREAS' MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR HIM TO "CONTINUE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PRETENSE OF THE PROTECTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS."
