One of the largest donors to Obama Super PAC Priorities USA called Mormonism a "cult" in a Tweet posted from his personal account Monday.

Maher has been a persistent critic of presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith. He is also one of the largest donors to the pro-Obama Super PAC, having made a contribution of $1 million earlier this year, which put him in the company of an elite group of donors including DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg who donated $2 million to Priorities USA.

Katzenberg is currently facing an SEC investigation over allegations of bribing Chinese officials.

This is not the first time Maher’s controversial comments have created trouble for the Obama campaign. He has previously used vulgar language to describe conservative women in what critics have called overt sexism.

The Obama campaign has demanded that Governor Romney denounce outside PACs that threaten to run ads targeting Barack Obama’s religion. Romney did that last week when the New York Times reported that a Super PAC funded by Joe Ricketts was planning to attack Obama’s affiliation with Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who said of the attacks on 9/11 that America’s "chickens were coming home to roost." Obama campaign senior adviser David Axelrod still insisted that Romney had not gone far enough in his denunciation.

The Obama campaign has refused to comment on Maher’s comments attacking Mormonism.
