It was released in 2024, but Einstein and the Bomb is a film that takes you right back to 1932, the year that Albert Einstein left Nazi Germany.

Einstein was a renowned German theorist and physicist who developed the theory of relativity, as well as making contributions to quantum theory. What many don't know is that his famous equation helped to explain mass-energy equivalence, which indirectly helped contribute to the invention of the atomic bomb.

The film uses Einstein's own words from speeches, letters and interviews to create the storyline, documenting his legendary work and his escape from the Nazi regime. It captures the often overlooked time the scientist spent hiding out in Norfolk, England, in the hopes he wouldn't be uncovered by assassins, in his small wooden cabin.

The film has garnered a lot of positive online reviews from excited viewers, who have given it an overall review score of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes. One fan of the docudrama simply stated: "It provided some new insights into Einstein's life."

In a more detailed review of Einstein and the Bomb, one fan wrote: "In this documentary about Dr Albert Einstein, viewers are presented with a profoundly educational experience that significantly overshadows its entertainment value, albeit the latter is still appreciably present.

"In an era where entertainment often trumps educational content, this documentary serves as a beacon of enlightenment, offering a rare glimpse into the mind of one of history's greatest thinkers."

That being said, the educational elements of the film have been put together based on lots of factual content, including the non-fiction book by Stuart McLaren titled 'Saving Einstein: When Norfolk Hid a Genius'. Its pages detail the real-life people that helped Einstein during his time hiding in Norfolk, based at the Roughton camp.

The film features a series of talented actors helping to reenact the interesting life of Einstein during this time period, with Aidan McArdle playing the 'genius' himself. Alongside him on screen is Andrew Havill as Commander Locker-Lampson, Rachel Barry as Margery Howard and Helena Westerman as Barbara Goodhall.

One fan even compared it to the 2023 blockbuster hit film based on the development of the first nuclear weapons during World War II, writing, "Better than Oppenheimer." While this drama didn't quite reach the same heights as the Oscar-winning movie, it's clear to see the crossover of fans, with similar themes and topics taking a hold.

Others couldn't help but geek out over the real-life footage used within the film, calling it "fascinating" with facts they feel are well "worth remembering".

Meanwhile, a critic described it stating: "This thrilling exploration of several topics surrounding Einstein will leave anyone and everyone in awe."

To see the film for yourself and learn more about one of the world's most recognisable figures, Einstein and the Bomb is available to stream now exclusively on Netflix.
