Police are treating a gun attack in north Belfast as attempted murder.

A 26-year-old man is in a stable condition after he was shot at Ballymoney Street off the Oldpark Road at about 2300 BST on Thursday.

Three men went into a house and shot him, wounding him in the upper body.

He was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast for treatment. The victim was initially in a critical condition but is now stable.

Councillor Danny Lavery, Sinn Fein, knows the victim's family.

"Apparently they rapped the door and he came to the door and they shot him. He is critically ill in hospital.

"We thought this kind of thing was all over. It is about time everybody got rid of their guns," he said.

Police are investigating a motive for the shooting. They have appealed for information.
