A 22-year-old man who died in a two-vehicle crash on a country road has been named by police.

Ian Buchanan, from Aberdeen, was the front seat passenger in a black Honda Civic when it was involved in a collision with a blue Volkswagen Golf near Inverurie.

The 23-year-old Honda driver remains "critical but stable" in hospital.

The crash happened on the B993 Kemnay to Monymusk road at 1710 BST on Saturday.

Grampian Police said the 51-year-old female driver of the Volkswagen spent the night in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary before being released.

Insp Scott Mann said: "Tragically, a young man has died as a result of the collision and another is very seriously injured. My thoughts are with the families of both at this time.

"Clearly we are at a very early stage with our inquiries and I cannot comment on the cause of the collision at this time.

"I appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision or indeed anyone who may have noticed either of the cars involved on the B993 around 5pm on Saturday to contact us as soon as possible."

The road was closed for about seven hours while investigators examined the scene.
