A £1.9m building providing respite care for adults with learning disabilities has officially opened in Suffolk.

The Vinefields, in Bury St Edmunds, will give short breaks for up to eight residents at a time and provide regular respite support to 70 families.

It has been designed by Suffolk County Council together with occupational therapists, adults with learning disabilities, families and staff.

The centre is equipped to care for adults with complex needs.

It also has a range of outdoor areas which include "sensory" plants and water features.

Councillor Colin Noble from the county council said: "Carers of adults with learning disabilities often provide a lifetime of care and support of over 50 hours a week.

"Caring for another person is one of the most important, selfless things you can do."
