American Orchestras: Our spotlight this week falls on the Fort Wayne (IN) Philharmonic, and its remarkable conductor, Edvard Tchivzhel (CHEEV-zhel), the former associate conductor of the USSR State Symphony Orchestra, who defected to the U.S. while on tour in 1991. From the historic Embassy Theater in Fort Wayne, we'll hear Tchivzhel conduct the Fort Wayne Philharmonic in performances of the Armenian Suite by American-Armenian composer Richard Yardumian and one of the signature pieces by Aram Khachaturian: the "Spartacus" Suites.
