People in the Isle of Man are being urged to send supplies to island troops in Afghanistan.

John Quaggin, 25, is serving with the 1 Lancashire Battle Group in Afghanistan. He is encouraging people to send items to lift soldiers' spirits.

Sweets, dried fruit and lip balm are popular with the troops, he said.

Items can be dropped off at libraries and at post offices. Parcels under 2kg (4.4lbs) will be sent for free by the post office.

The appeal is being supported by the Family Library in Douglas and the Isle of Man post office.

Mary Cousins from the Family Library said: "I think that Cpl John Quaggin and his regiment are doing a very difficult job, certainly one I wouldn't want to do and they will appreciate a few home comforts on the front line."
