The 51-year-old was found outside a close in the city's Baldovan Terrace at about 0120 BST. Tayside Police said he is in a critical condition in Ninewells Hospital.
It is believed he had been drinking in the nearby Albert Bar the previous evening.
A local man will appear in court on Monday in connection with the incident.
