During the 1960s and 1970s the artefact industry was an important source of cash income for some villages around the Sepik River in Papua New Guinea (PNG). This 1977 ABC Weekend Magazine story captures the interest that this region had for tourists and the growth of the traditional art industry. A woodcarver at work in Kambot village is seen as well as art works held in the cultural centre and art market at Angoram. Some glimpses of Wee Wak including the Wee Wak market are also seen. Craftsmen still carve to traditional designs, and many of the original models for their work are now in foreign collections. The PNG Government has introduced some strict controls to save the art drain.
