At least 9 killed, 6 injured in massive fire at hotel in Kolkata
KOLKATA: At least nine people were killed and six others injured after a massive fire broke out at a hotel in Kolkata's Mirza Ghalib Street early on Wednesday, officials said.According to news agency ANI, the deceased were Bangladeshi citizens who had travelled to Kolkata for medical treatment.The fire broke out at around 2am.Fire department personnel reached the spot and launched a rescue operation.According to a senior official, 80 people have been rescued from the five-storey building.Six people were injured in the incident and were taken for treatment.
Officials said further details about the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the deaths were being investigated."The dense smoke made it difficult for firefighters to climb the staircase and reach the upper floors. While nine people have died, more deaths are feared," a police officer told PTI."Our priority is to rescue those trapped and determine the reasons for the fire.
The flames have been doused, and the cooling process is underway," he added.West Bengal Fire Department headquarters is located close to the hotel building.Speaking to PTI, Fire department minister Kaushik Chowdhury, "The situation inside this building is very bad. There are several hotels inside this building.
I am shocked to see what was going on here."Asked about the cause of the fire, the minister said that it could be because of a short circuit. "But a forensic examination would reveal what led to the blaze," he said."The building management did not comply with basic safety and construction norms. It is alleged that there were several irregularities in the functioning of the hotel," the minister added.8 killed in separate incidentIn a separate incident in Birbhum district, at least eight people were killed after fire broke out at a private hotel in Tarapith on Tuesday.The fire broke out at around 5am on the ground floor of the four-storey Hotel Bideshinii, located near a pond and a short distance from Tarapith police station.Most of the guests were asleep when the blaze began.Firefighters reached the hotel and brought the fire under control.
