Police have arrested a man on suspicion of attempted murder at a hotel used to house asylum seekers.

Officers were called to reports of a stabbing at Stanwell Hotel in Staines, near Heathrow Airport, at 18:30 BST on Saturday.

One man in his 30s was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, Surrey Police said.

A Somali national in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody, the force added.

"Due to the nature of the report, armed officers were dispatched to the scene and assisted with the arrest," Det Supt Kate Hyder said.

"There remains a police presence in the area while we carry out initial inquiries."

She added: "We understand this incident has caused concern within the local community, and I encourage you to speak to local officers."

Police said they were not looking for anyone else linked to the incident.
