Ballet building wins design award

Scottish Ballet's new headquarters has been voted the country's best new building in the Scottish Design awards.

Malcolm Fraser Architects scooped the top honours at the annual ceremony for the building in Glasgow's southside.

An Edinburgh compost shed, designed by Groves-Raines Architects, won the best low-cost project.

The £22,000 shed also won the chairman's award at the ceremony on Friday night.

Project architect on the Scottish Ballet building, Clive Albert, said: "By using materials like wood, which mature with age, this building will look better in 20 years time than it does today."

And with a price of £22,000, the compost shed designed by Groves-Raines Architects could be the UK's most expensive - as well as the first to win a major architecture award.

Awards chairman Roger Zogolovitch said: "After a long afternoon looking at nominations this composting shed stood apart for its impulsive, attractive and seductive charms.

Edinburgh-based Graeme Massie Architects was named practice of the year for its work in countries such as Dubai and Iceland.

The Lifetime Achievement Award for services to architecture went to Dick Cannon and Tom Elder, who have worked together since 1980.
