Instead, the 2026 season has been defined by inconsistency, while Bichette's future with the New York Mets is suddenly becoming one of baseball's most intriguing trade deadline storylines. And with the Mets sliding out of contention and Toronto searching for answers, speculation has quickly shifted toward whether a reunion could make sense for both sides.
One of the most prominent voices surrounding the team has proposed a deadline trade that would reunite the Blue Jays with their former franchise shortstop as both sides appear to be in need of a bold change.
“The New York Mets are in full sell-off mode, sitting at 43-60 and facing a double-digit deficit in the National League wild-card race,” Mike Wilner wrote for the Toronto Star. “That gives the Jays an opportunity to fix a big mistake they made over the winter. It’s time to bring back Bo Bichette.”
And Wilner’s suggestion came shortly after Bichette acknowledged that he could find himself shipped out of Queens as the Mets disappoint.
“As someone with no-trade protection in his contract, Bo Bichette controls whether he will remain with the Mets beyond Aug. 3,” Mike Puma reported for the New York Post. “Bichette has indicated he’s in no hurry to leave. And yet, the third baseman stopped short … of saying he would block any trade proposal that involves him.”
Bichette's first season in New York has not unfolded as expected. After signing a three-year, $126 million contract with the Mets over the winter, the 28-year-old has struggled to produce at his previous All-Star level, batting .256 with a .677 OPS, 10 home runs and 15 doubles through the club's disappointing campaign.
Whether that opens the door to a Toronto reunion remains uncertain. The Blue Jays would have to decide if reacquiring Bichette is worth the financial commitment and prospect cost, while Bichette would have the final say. But one of Bichette’s former teammates made it clear that the roster would be open to a reunion if the front office does decide to pursue the wild idea.
“We definitely miss him,” Kevin Gausman told Wilner. “I’m sure (Vladimir Guerrero Jr.) misses him, you know. That guy was one of his best friends for his first seven, eight years in the big leagues. (They) shared a lot of great moments together.”
The brief but pointed comment highlights Bichette's enduring standing among his former teammates, even after his departure in free agency. While Toronto's front office chose to move in a different direction last winter, perhaps they could have a change of heart if the price to reunite with Bichette is reasonable.
