One person has been found dead after a fire at a house near Welshpool golf club in Powys, say police.

Four fire crews and a search and rescue team were called to the cottage at 1050 BST on Thursday.

The blaze engulfed 70% of the house and emergency services had feared someone was trapped inside.

After an examination by forensics officers, police and fire service specialists, it has been confirmed that a body has been found.

Officers said formal identification has not taken place but it is believed to be the person who lived there.

No details of the house's occupant will be released until identification has taken place.

Dyfed-Powys Police have been keeping their family informed.

Officers are not treating the death as suspicious but are continuing to investigate the cause of the blaze.

The Powys coroner has been told and a post mortem examination will take place early next week.
