A large folk festival in Cumbria has been cancelled due to reduced funding and lack of ticket sales, organisers say.

The 16th Brampton Live festival near Carlisle was scheduled for 16-18 July with a line-up of artists from the UK, America and Canada.

Organisers said the future of the event was uncertain.

A specially commissioned project celebrating Hadrian's Wall, due to be premiered at the event, will go ahead.

Founders Ken and Sue Bradburn and their fellow directors of Brampton Live Ltd, Mick North and Steve Henderson said: "The combination of reduced funding, decreasing sponsorship and disappointing ticket sales has meant we feel it would be irresponsible to continue."

They thanked volunteers, performers and supporters past and present.

They added: "On a positive note we intend to proceed with the All Along the Wall project which was specially commissioned for the festival.

"A live performance CD will be available in July and other performances are planned, hopefully including The Sage, Gateshead and a range of other venues."
