Parents have been invited to have their say on plans to turn an underperforming Brighton school into an academy.

Brighton and Hove City Council has submitted a bid to the government for Portslade Community College to open as an academy in September 2011.

The council said it was a "serious concern" the number of pupils achieving five A* to C GCSE grades was below 30%.

Residents can have their say on the future of Portslade by visiting the council's website.

The education group, the Aldridge Foundation is set to be lead sponsor of the academy in partnership with the city council and the University of Sussex.

The group was founded by entrepreneur Rod Aldridge, who used to be a pupil at Portslade.

The Aldridge Foundation currently sponsors the Brighton Aldridge Community Academy and a school in Darwen, Lancashire.
