Arsenal are weighing up whether to make an improved offer for Bruno Guimaraes after Newcastle United rebuffed their initial approach.

Mikel Arteta has instructed his bosses at the Emirates Stadium to sign a new top-class midfielder this summer ahead of Arsenal’s title defence.

As a result the Gunners have been linked with a number of midfielders, including Sandro Tonali, Morgan Rogers and Mateus Fernandes.

Guimaraes emerged as Arsenal’s latest midfield target last week, with the Gunners said to have made a ‘verbal offer’ for the Brazil World Cup star.

That approach, worth around £55m, was rebuffed by Newcastle, who have insisted that Guimaraes is not for sale.

But Arsenal have not been completely put off and are considering making an improved bid and entering into direct talks with their Premier League rivals over a summer deal, according to The Athletic.

It is claimed Arsenal are not expected to face any issues over personal terms, suggesting Guimaraes is open to joining the new Premier League champions.

Guimaraes has been a mainstay in the Newcastle team since his £40m move from Lyon in 2022, making close to 200 appearances for the Magpies.

The 28-year-old, who is currently at the World Cup with Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil, has won the Carabao Cup and played in the Champions League while at St James’ Park.

But Guimaraes may have loftier ambitions after Newcastle failed to qualify for any European competition last season, finishing just 12th in the Premier League.

Newcastle’s poor form led to much speculation over Howe’s future but the former England target looks set to carry on in the job going into the new season.

Former Newcastle winger John Barnes believes Guimaraes would be a ‘great signing’ for Arsenal but says the Brazilian will cost a lot more than £55m.

‘Players are going to come and players are going to go, that’s modern football,’ he told Betfred.

However, £55m is a very low fee in my opinion and if he was to move there, then he’d be a great signing for Arsenal and it would be a great disappointment for Newcastle.

‘As a former player, I still love Newcastle and I hope he stays, but it’s going to be difficult for them to keep their best players.

Arsenal have also been linked with Guimaraes’ Newcastle teammate Sandro Tonali but are not currently pursuing the Italy international.
