Bus stop timing system extended

A bus stop "live" time information system is set to be extended across much of south east Scotland.

Travel group SEStran has won more than £850,000 to roll the scheme out from Edinburgh into East Lothian, the Borders and Fife.

The £2.3m project will let passengers see how long they have to wait for any given service while standing at a stop.

Once installed bus operators will be responsible for the maintenance of the scheme.

The new system will integrate with the existing Bustracker technology, allowing commuters to Edinburgh from other local authority areas to get up-to-date travel information.

Russell Imrie, who chairs SEStran, said the Real Time Passenger Information (RTPI) system could make a major difference to bus passengers.

"RTPI will give travellers a real boost and put them back in charge of their journeys, through access to real-time information," he said.

"SEStran has been very fortunate to succeed in acquiring such substantial funding from the EU.

"We will continue to seek further funding, for additional projects, wherever possible."
