The sister of a man shot in Strabane over the weekend said he has been told he has 24 hours to leave the country.

Brendan McCafferty, 25, was in bed when two masked men forced their way into his Glebe Gardens home at about midnight on Saturday.

They beat him with a bat, before shooting him in the arm and leg.

Louise McGrinder said her brother was forced to leave Londonderry two years ago following threats from the group Republican Action Against Drugs.

"He had two broken wrist and a broken elbow, he has three gunshots wounds," she said.

"They said whilst they were leaving '24 hours to get out, or he'll be shot dead."

Ms McGrinder said the gunmen did not say who they were.

"He had threats in the past, the police have notified him with these threats from RAAD,"

Mr McCafferty lived in Birmingham for a time, but returned to Northern Ireland in August of last year.

"Brendan is a changed person. He's trying to clean his life up," she said.

"He thought he was getting on with is life here, and now this has happened.

"Where is he going to go when he comes out of hospital? He needs looking after, who's going to look after him if he has to leave the town or the country."

Mr McCafferty's girlfriend was struck on the head during the attack.

Police have appealed for witnesses to contact them.
