Store closures are continuing to hit Britain's high streets with Morrisons preparing to shut down multiple sites

One of the country's biggest supermarkets has confirmed the location names for its first wave of store closures, which are due to take place throughout the year.

Morrisons has revealed multiple shops have been earmarked for closure as part of a wider restructuring that will see 100 supermarkets close for good.

It should be noted that the majority of supermarkets to be shut down will be the retailer's smaller Morrisons Daily stores.

When announcing the closures, the supermarket giant cited recent "cost increases" as a result from Labour Government policy.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has come under fire over her decision to raise the National Living Wage and the National Insurance rate paid by employers.

It is understood that hundreds of jobs continue to be at risk while consultations are continuing within the business.

Despite this, many of the workers employed at impacted stores could be found alternative roles in remaining Morrisons locations.

A Morrisons spokesperson said: "The performance of all company-owned stores across our Convenience business is subject to continuous review.

"Having completed the review, we are now proposing to take the tough but necessary decision to close a number of these stores over the next few months.

"This process has identified several stores, which were part of the McColl’s acquisition, whose performance has been challenged for several years and which are loss-making, despite remedial action."

Currently, there are over 1,600 Morrisons Daily stores in the UK, with the majority of these locations joining the retailer following the acquisition of McColl's in 2022.

While these closures are continuing at pace, Morrisons has previously stated it plans to grow its convenience store network across the country.
