Baking is a great and creative hobby to spend your weekends attempting, with cake being something which everybody knows and loves tucking into. Cake is also incredibly easy to make for any level of baking experience.

However, one chef has argued that cake will actually taste far better and be “super soft” if you stop baking it in the oven. Chef and TikTok star Andy Hearnden, better known as Andy Cooks, revealed that there’s another kitchen appliance that has a multitude of uses when it comes to cooking and baking that people are overlooking. For his cake recipe, he prefers to use a rice cooker for the job.

In a video from earlier this month, Andy said: “Stop treating your rice cooker like it’s only got one job, you pineapple.”

That’s it, all you have to do is swap out your oven for a rice cooker. Before the cake batter is made, chop up the pineapple into chunks.

To help it achieve that caramelised gooeyness, add the brown sugar into the rice cooker and cook on a normal setting. The cake batter is made by whisking the egg whites until stiff peaks are formed, followed with the sugar to create a meringue.

Follow by folding in the egg yolks, before adding the dry ingredients in stages. Once the brown sugar has turned into a caramel, add the fruit.

Pour in the cake batter and spread over the fruit evenly. The cake can then be cooked on the normal rice cooker function.

Rice cooker updise down pineapple cake ???????????? Ingredients - 115g (4 oz) butter - 180g (6 ½ oz) light brown sugar - 400g pineapple peaces - 10 maraschino cherries - 120g (4 ¼ oz) cake flour - 5g (1 tsp) baking powder - ¼ tsp salt - 4 large eggs - 200g (7 oz) caster sugar - 1 tsp vanilla essence Directions 1. Add the brown sugar and butter to a rice cooker and start it on a normal function. 2. To make the cake batter, separate the eggs into two bowls—whites in one, yolks in the other. 3. Whisk the egg whites until soft peaks form, then slowly whisk in the caster sugar to create a meringue. 4. Add the vanilla essence to the yolks and whisk until they are a light yellow colour. 5. Gently fold the yolks into the meringue. Then, in 2-3 batches, carefully fold in the flour, baking powder, and salt. 6. Turn your rice cooker off after about 10 minutes. Then arrange the pineapple pieces and cherries on top of the caramel that should have formed 7. Pour the cake batter over the pineapple in the pan and spread it evenly. 8. Start your rice cooker on a normal function and once it's finished use a toothpick or a cake tester to make sure it's cooked by putting it to the bottom of the cake and pulling it out. If it comes out clean, it's good to go. 9. Carefully turn the cake out and enjoy while still warm.

Andy continued: “Pineapple upside down cake in a rice cooker, you say. Hmm, actually becomes almost more of a dessert than a cake. Super soft, lovely, sweet syrup. That’s delicious.”

Andy’s video has been viewed over 284,700 times, receiving 11,000 likes and 68 comments, at the time of writing. A number of people were left divided over Andy’s unique baking method.

Wentley said: “Heh. It’s a neat trick, but I love the harder, caramelized sugar you get from baking.”

Brandon wrote: “I just bought one and I can’t wait to make meals.”

Klootviool21 commented: “It looks woooooow… it’s only that hot pineapple, not convinced.”

So if you’re looking for an innovative way to make cakes without an oven, here’s how you can do it in a rice cooker at home.

Add the brown sugar and butter to a rice cooker and start it on a normal function. To make the cake batter, separate the eggs into two bowls—whites in one, yolks in the other.

Whisk the egg whites until soft peaks form, then slowly whisk in the caster sugar to create a meringue.

Add the vanilla essence to the yolks and whisk until they are a light yellow colour.

Gently fold the yolks into the meringue. Then, in two to three batches, carefully fold in the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Turn your rice cooker off after about 10 minutes. Then arrange the pineapple pieces and cherries on top of the caramel that should have formed

Pour the cake batter over the pineapple in the pan and spread it evenly.

Start your rice cooker on a normal function and once it's finished use a toothpick or a cake tester to make sure it's cooked by putting it to the bottom of the cake and pulling it out. If it comes out clean, it's good to go.

Carefully turn the cake out and enjoy while still warm.
