Cardiff pie firm Clark's makes bakery move

A baking institution, which is encrusted in Cardiff folklore, said it is planning to grow its business after nearly 100 years.

Clark's Pies is to move staff and production from its bakery in Victoria Park to its other city bakery in Grangetown.

The family firm, which is 99 years old, said there will be no compulsory redundancies.

"It will make us fitter for the future," said a spokesman.

The business first began with founder Mary Clark, a mother-of-seven baking the pies in her kitchen.

The shop in Cowbridge Road East first opened its doors in the 1920s.

Both shops will remain open under the changes.

"Clarksies", as they're known, have had a long association with the city, and have beenvenerated by the likes of singer Frank Hennessy among others.

"It's an exciting time for the company," said one of the directors Dennis Dutch, grandson of the founder.

"Merging our two bakeries will focus expertise on one site".

Mr Dutch said the "unique" recipe would remain unchanged.
