Christmas With The Morehouse
Christmas with the Morehouse Glee Club: We bring you a special holiday concert performed specifically for NPR and Performance Today last Sunday afternoon in Atlanta by the Morehouse College Glee Club, the acclaimed ensemble from one of the nation's finest traditionally black colleges. Music Director David Morrow leads the 80 men of Morehouse through a special holiday program of carols, Christmas songs, and spirituals, many arranged by such illustrious Morehouse graduates as Wendell Whalum, ("Mary had a Baby," "De Morning Come," "Go, Tell it On the Mountain") Uzee Brown, ("Go Where I Send Thee") and Nigerian composer Babatunde Olatunji (bah-bah-TOON-day oh-lah-TOON-jee) ("Betelehemu"). We'll also hear the Morehouse Glee Club perform "Noel" by Steven Sametz, "Christmas Fantasy" by Randol Alan Bass, "Heavenly Light," a Russian carol by Alexander Kopylow, "La Virgen lava panales" ("The Virgin Washes the Swaddling Clothes"), "Winter Triptych," with horn and harp, by James Adler, and "All Roun' de Glory Manger," arranged by Leonard de Paur. The Glee Club performs on stage at the Martin Luther King, Jr. International Chapel on the Morehouse campus in Atlanta. (NPR)
