The congregation of a small church in the East Riding of Yorkshire has saved it from closure by raising £30,000 for restoration and repairs.

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, is to visit St Nicholas Church in Dunnington near Driffield to hold a service to celebrate its rejuvenation.

The church, which has only eight pews, needed a new roof, drains, windows, porch and electric wiring.

The congregation of less than a dozen people raised the cash over nine years.

Repairs to the font and bell turret were also needed along with new carpets and a heating system.

The Reverend James Grainger-Smith, vicar at St Nicholas, said: "We're delighted to welcome Archbishop Sentamu to Dunnington, to give thanks for the incredible restoration of this tiny church building.

"Although the congregation were small in number their courage and commitment has been huge."

A service of thanksgiving, lead by Dr Sentamu, will be held at the church at 1830 BST on Friday.
