Two men were lucky to only suffer minor injuries when their convertible car left the M54 and dropped 30ft, landing on its roof, paramedics said.

The men, aged in their 20s, were out of the car by the time emergency crews arrived at the scene, between junctions 6 and 7 near Wellington, Shropshire.

The car left the motorway and careered through trees before landing on a road below, an ambulance spokesman said.

The men were both taken to hospital with multiple minor injuries.

The vehicle came to rest in Golf Links Lane, Wellington at about 1955 BST on Saturday.

Two ambulances and an off-duty air ambulance doctor who was passing at the time of the incident went to the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "On arrival at the scene, crews found a soft-top convertible car that had left the motorway, travelled through some trees and landed on its roof on the road below.

"The road is around 30ft (9.1 metres) below the motorway.

"Considering the damage to the vehicle in the crash, and the length of the fall, the occupants of the car were fortunate not to have suffered more serious or even fatal injuries."
