Cornwall charity send aid boxes to storm-hit Guatemala

Aid relief boxes from a Cornish charity are to be sent to help survivors of a tropical storm in Central America.

ShelterBox began to co-ordinate emergency aid provision after a storm caused widespread flooding and mudslides in Guatemala on Saturday.

About 150 people were killed in the storm, with 94,000 left homeless.

John Leach, ShelterBox head of operations, said that "the need for emergency shelter is clear".

Mr Leach said: "Nearly 100,000 people have been evacuated from their homes.

"Last week's eruption from the Pacaya volcano is likely to have worsened the effects of the flooding and we are looking to see how we can help those in greatest need."

Each box from the charity costs £490 and contains a 10-person tent, blankets, water purification and cooking equipment, tools and a stove.
