Cornwall woman wins cancer treatment fight

A Cornwall grandmother has won her nine-month battle for the NHS to treat her liver cancer.

An appeals panel has ruled the NHS should pick up the bill for Sue Dunn's use of Cetuximab.

Mrs Dunn, 65, from St Austell, had been told that although Cetuximab is registered for use by some NHS patients, it was not for those with Mrs Dunn's particular condition.

It has cost her family about £35,000 at £800 a week.

Mrs Dunn said: "If it wasn't working I would have understood. But it does work."

Cornwall Primary Care Trust said a clear improvement in Mrs Dunn's condition and new information about her case history had swung the appeal in her favour.

Spokesman Dr Jon Tilbury said: "These are very difficult cases and and the PCT completely understands the distress it can cause.

"For the family and Mrs Dunn I am delighted that we are able to say she can have the treatment."
