Plans for a new waste incinerator site at Avonmouth have been unanimously rejected by Bristol City Council.

Planning officials had recommended Viridor Waste Management's 20 acre "resource recovery centre" be approved.

But all seven members of the council's Development Control panel rejected the scheme, which would have dealt with about 300,000 tonnes of waste each year.

Viridor spokesman Howard Ellard said the firm was "disappointed".

He added that the firm, based in Taunton, Somerset, would "review its position over the next few days and consider the way forward".

Objectors included Bristol Friends of the Earth, Sustainable Redland and Pilning and Severn Beach Parish Council.
