A husband and wife have died after their car was involved in a crash with a single-decker bus in South Lanarkshire.

Strathclyde Police said the accident happened on the A72 Carlisle Road near Larkhall at about 1300 BST.

The driver of the car, Jean McCallum, 72, died at the scene. Her husband Ronald, 73, was airlifted to hospital, where he later died.

The couple were from Chatelherault Crescent, Hamilton.

No-one on the bus was injured, but the bus driver was treated in hospital for shock.

The crash happened near the Brookside Garden Centre. Part of the road was closed for accident investigations to be carried out.

Officers appealed for any witnesses to the crash to contact them.
