Part of the northbound carriageway of the M6 motorway in Lancashire was closed for several hours after a serious accident, police said.

A Peugeot 206 and Land Rover Freelander collided north of junction 32 shortly before 1000 BST.

An 89-year-old woman passenger in the Freelander has been airlifted to hospital with head injuries. The two drivers suffered minor injuries.

The carriageway, was closed from junctions 32 and 33, until 1240 BST.
