A large fire on an industrial estate in Nottinghamshire has been extinguished after 48 hours of "continuous firefighting".

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) was called to Langar Industrial Estate after a fire broke out on Thursday, involving a "significant quantity" of scrap metal.

At the height of the blaze, 12 fire engines and a number of specialist appliances were deployed to the scene, including support from Leicestershire and South Yorkshire.

In an update just before 22:00 BST on Saturday, NFRS said the fire had been fully extinguished and that crews had begun to leave the scene.

Residents who live nearby to the industrial estate were urged to keep their windows and doors closed while the fire was tackled.

By Friday morning, four fire engines remained at the scene and firefighters worked with the owners of the site to separate the scrap metal and deal with remaining hot spots.

In an update on Saturday night, the fire service said: "Managing an incident of this scale is challenging in any circumstances, let alone during a heatwave, and the dedication shown by all staff has been exceptional.

"We would also like to thank the local community for their patience and cooperation throughout the incident. Your support has been greatly appreciated."

Temperatures across Nottinghamshire and swathes of the country soared throughout the week and hot weather warnings were issued.

The heatwave also prompted safety warnings by the fire service, urging people to take extra care when enjoying outdoor activities.
