Police on Tyneside have warned visitors to one of Europe's largest travelling fairs that officers will be out in force to prevent trouble.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to flock to the annual Hoppings, which takes place on Newcastle's Town Moor until 26 June.

Northumbria Police said uniformed, plain clothes officers and motor patrols were being deployed.

This year marks the 128th visit of the Hoppings to the city.

The Hoppings, which boasts dozens of rides and other attractions, began on Friday night.

Insp Jan Harrison said: "Thousands of people visit the fair every day and the vast majority are out to enjoy themselves.

"There are a few who cause trouble and these are the ones we will be looking out for.

"We will be monitoring the fair and dealing firmly with anyone intent on spoiling the enjoyment of others at the Hoppings or anyone causing a nuisance to residents."
