Cwmbran teenager named child hero after fire rescue

A 15-year-old who rescued six youngsters from a burning house has been given a bravery award.

Tyler Holpin, and neighbour Leighton Griffiths, went to the rescue of children after hearing screams from a neighbouring house in Cwmbran last May.

Leighton used a hosepipe to keep flames under control while Tyler climbed a ladder to rescue the children, carrying them out one by one.

Tyler was named the Child Public Hero at the Spirit of Fire Awards.

The fire broke out in the early hours of the morning in the Greenmeadow area of the town.

It was caused by a problem with the electrical fuse box at the house.

Tyler told BBC Wales: "The smoke and flames coming out of the house were unbelievable. I'd never seen anything like it."

"We put the ladder against the house and I just climbed the ladder and pulled the children out. I didn't really think about it."

He also described his award as "unbelievable".

Tyler was given the Child Public Hero award by Esther Rantzen and Anna Williamson at a ceremony at Wembley Stadium in London on Friday.

The Fire Fighters Charity marks acts of bravery that have taken place within the UK's Fire & Rescue Service over the past 12 months.
