Date set for £7m Windsor-Eton Olympic road revamp

The date has been set for work to start on a £7m upgrade of a busy Berkshire road which will be a main route to an Olympic 2012 site.

Improvements to the Windsor and Eton relief road will begin from Monday and will include bridge upgrades, new safety barriers and resurfacing works.

The route is part of the Olympic Route Network as it links to the rowing venue, Dorney Rowing Lake.

The work, funded by the government, is due to be completed by March 2011.

The road, which runs from junction 6 of the M4 to the Clarence Road roundabout in Windsor, is the borough's busiest road - carrying up to 22 million vehicles a year, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Council said.

Most of the work will be completed at night but the council has warned residents to expect some disruption during daylight hours.

Councillor Colin Rayner, the borough's lead member for highways and streetcare, said: "Our key aim in this project is to refurbish the road but minimise disruption to residents and visitors.

"As a result we are starting the work after Royal Ascot and working around local attractions' busiest days."
