Part of the M1 in Leicestershire has been closed following a serious crash involving two cars.

Emergency services were called to the scene, just after junction 20 on the northbound carriageway, at around 08:00 BST on Sunday.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said one person was rescued from a car before being taken to hospital. The extent of their injuries is not yet known.

In an update at 18:45 BST, National Highways added that the southbound carriageway had reopened, but the northbound carriageway is still closed and is not due to reopen for "several hours".

The highways authority confirmed that traffic initially caught in the closure had been released.
