'Dirty' Arncliffe Court Care Home in Liverpool rated inadequate again

A "visibly dirty" care home with "smelly sheets and mattresses" has been rated inadequate after its second successive inspection.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has ordered Arncliffe Court Care Home in Halewood, Liverpool, to urgently improve, and taken further action to protect people following inspections in March and April.

The home, run by Advinia Care Homes Limited, provides accommodation and personal care to older people, some of whom are living with dementia. It had 89 residents when the inspection took place.

Andrew Peck from the CQC said: "It was concerning to see little improvement had been made since we last visited, despite us being clear about what needed to be done".

"Leaders still weren't managing the service well and we continued to see people being placed at risk of poor care in a place they call home," he said.

Peck was particularly concerned at the "high number of people having falls and continued incidents involving people experiencing periods of distress".

He added bathrooms, bedrooms and communal areas were "visibly dirty, and we found bad smells coming from people's bedding and mattresses indicating they weren't being cleaned regularly".

"We have told leaders where we expect to see rapid, and continued improvements and will continue to monitor the home closely to keep people safe during this time.

Conditions have been placed on the service's registration to ensure proper processes are followed and leaders must also send CQC an action plan to show what improvements are being made.
