Dog thrown into River Clyde from bridge

A man tried to kill a dog by throwing it from a footbridge into the River Clyde, it has emerged.

The Scottish SPCA said the incident happened close to Glasgow Green at about 1700 BST on Tuesday.

The dog, a tri-coloured crossbreed bitch, survived the 25ft plunge into the water.

The incident happened at the footbridge linking Richmond Park and Glasgow Green near Haughview Terrace.

The "petrified" animal was taken out of the water by Scottish SPCA staff and taken to the Glasgow Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre.

Staff there said the dog, who is thought to be aged between three and five, was "very obedient and friendly" and have named her Poppy.

Scottish SPCA Inspector Gillian Dick said: "This dog was very lucky not to have broken bones or even drowned.

"The bridge is around 25ft high so there is no doubt that whoever did this intended to cause her harm and perhaps even kill her.

"When we arrived she was still in the water because she couldn't climb the embankment. She was extremely nervous and absolutely petrified, which is not surprising considering what had just happened to her."

Poppy does not have a name tag or a microchip, but the animal charity asked for anyone with information which could help identify the man responsible to contact them.

Ms Dick added: "We are hopeful that a passer-by or one of the rowers who use the water in this area may have seen something.

"The person witnessed throwing the dog over the bridge is described as a young white man who was wearing a black jacket."
