GTA 6 pre-orders are officially live, but not all listings are what they may seem. Since Rockstar started taking money for its upcoming title, we’ve seen the rise of a particular scam that’s sure to catch out plenty of gamers.

One quick search of ‘GTA 6 pre-order’ on eBay surfaces several listings, all of which appear to be offering a pre-order of Grand Theft Auto 6 for varying amounts of cash. Some are priced lower than retail value at £59.99, others are way higher with one coming in at £104.85.

Needless to say, these prices are wildly different from the £69.99 and £89.99 that Rockstar is charging for the Standard and Ultimate editions respectively. However tempted shoppers may be to try and get a pre-order via these channels, these listings are very likely to be fake.

For one, Rockstar has confirmed that all physical editions of GTA 6 will be a code in a box, redeemable on your platform’s store. As such, even if you do get a pre-owned copy on eBay, it’s very likely that the code will already be redeemed and you’ll have essentially paid £70 for a plastic case.

While there are plenty of arguments to be made for having a disc – ownership rights and preservation being top of the list – there is one thing to be said for Rockstar going down the digital only route: they aren’t going to run out of copies.

As such, there’s no real risk of scalpers buying up all the stock and selling it back to you for an inflated price.

Right now, GTA 6 is available to pre-order completely normally at the likes of Amazon, Argos and Smyths. There’s no inflated price, and it’s guaranteed to arrive a week ahead of launch so you’ve time to download it for release day.

In fact, there’s a cheaper way to get GTA 6 if you purchase PlayStation Store credit via Loaded. That way, you can save 11% on the total cost price of a GTA 6 pre-order – although you’ll have to sacrifice having that physical game case to display on your shelf, of course.
