Donegal International Rally - co-driver killed in crash
A co-driver has died in an accident at the Donegal International Rally.
He was Thomas Maguire, aged in his 30s, from Longwood in County Meath.
The accident happened just after 1500 BST on Saturday when his vehicle went off the road south of Portsalon in the north of the county.
The driver of the vehicle was critically injured and is being treated in hospital. The rest of the event has been cancelled and a memorial service will be held on Sunday morning.
Competitors and club officials will attend the service at the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny at 1100 BST.
Clerk of the course, Danny Gormley, said that organisers' thoughts and prayers were with the Maguire family.
"Thomas loved rallying and his loss has deeply affected everyone involved in the rally," he said.
"His loss will be felt by rallying fans all over the country. It was the view of everyone in the Donegal Motor Club that the remainder of this year's rally should be cancelled as a mark of respect."
The annual rally is in its 38th year and was expected to attract an estimated 70,000 spectators to County Donegal.
It is the first time a competitor has been killed in the rally. In 2008, a spectator was killed and in 2002 two stewards were killed.
