Drink-driving campaign targets England World Cup games

Police in County Durham are to step up their hunt for drink drivers immediately after televised World Cup matches involving England.

Durham Police warned officers would be "more proactive than ever" in their hunt for offenders.

The force said it was launching its annual drink-driving campaign to coincide with the start of the tournament in South Africa.

A spokesman said most roadside checks would follow England games.

The spokesman said: "With the World Cup starting in a few days time we expect lots of people to have a drink while watching the action.

"Much of our activity will take place immediately following England matches during the tournament, so if people are going to local pubs to watch then they should use public transport, get a taxi or nominate someone to drive and abstain from alcohol.

"For those staying at home or visiting friends for a barbecue, I would also urge them to remember that the measures of drink poured at home tend to be a lot more generous than in pubs.

Last year Durham Constabulary recorded its lowest number of fatal accidents since the present force boundaries were created in 1974.
