A man who sexually abused a 15-year-old girl and sent her indecent text messages is facing a lengthy jail term.

James Little, 62, from Dumfries, carried out the offences between April and August last year in his home town.

His plea of not guilty to raping the schoolgirl was accepted by the Crown. He also admitted sexually abusing two other girls more than 20 years ago.

Temporary judge Norman Little QC deferred sentence but said he faced a "substantial" period in prison.

The High Court in Glasgow heard that, on 18 August last year, the girl told her mother about the abuse and the police were contacted.

Tests later found Little's DNA on the girl's breasts.

A plea of not guilty to raping the teenager was accepted, but he admitted sexually abusing two other girls.

He indecently assaulted one girl from the age of nine to 16 and the other on one occasion when she was 17.

The offences were committed between 1978 and 1996 at a house in Dumfries.

Advocate depute Paul Kearney told the court that the girl who was indecently assaulted from the age of nine would cry and beg Little to stop.

However, this had no effect on him and he would continue with the abuse.

The court heard that he eventually confessed to social workers who spoke to him when he was admitted to hospital last year.

Little told them he did not know why he had done it, but now knew it was wrong.

Solicitor advocate Bill McVicar told the court that Little suffered from angina and diabetes and asked for him to be allowed bail so that he could attend a hospital appointment.

Bail was granted and sentence deferred until next month.

Little was also placed on the sex offenders register.
