With the 2026 season still unfolding, the pressure on European governments to reallocate resources toward prevention is intensifying. Trade unions representing firefighters have warned that continued under‑investment in preventive measures will place frontline crews at ever‑greater risk, while insurers are already signalling higher premiums for properties in high‑risk zones.
Environmental NGOs are calling for stricter land‑use planning, incentives for re‑forestation with fire‑resistant species, and greater support for rural communities to maintain their landscapes.
