Europe is seeing a quiet revolution in how societies handle death, as researchers and legislators explore options that could dramatically lower the carbon emissions associated with funerals. The push comes after a study by Dutch sustainability consultancy Hedgehog estimated that a typical gas‑powered cremation releases about 181 kilograms of CO₂, while a conventional burial with a coffin and gravestone emits roughly 120 kilograms, figures comparable to driving a petrol car for up to 1,300 kilometres.

With roughly five million deaths recorded each year across the European Union, the cumulative "death footprint" adds up to a sizeable share of the bloc's overall emissions. The urgency of finding greener alternatives is therefore being felt not only by environmental groups but also by families seeking to align their final wishes with climate concerns.

At the Pontes crematorium in Antwerp, scientists are trialling a process known as aquamation, or "water cremation". Johan Van Dooren, a researcher at Pontes, explained that the method involves wrapping the body in a wool shroud, placing it in a sealed cylinder, and filling the chamber with a solution of 95 % water and 5 % potassium hydroxide. The mixture is heated to 160 °C under pressure for about four hours, leaving only bone fragments that families can keep in an urn.

Van Dooren said the technique is already being used in Scotland, where aquamation was legalised last year, and in Ireland, which opened its first centre in 2023. If the Flemish government follows through on planned legislation, Belgium could see its first official aquamations as early as 2028.

Germany's northern state of Schleswig‑Holstein took a further step on 18 June, when its parliament voted to recognise "terramation", a form of human composting, as a lawful burial method. The process, championed by entrepreneur Pablo Metz of the Meine Erde facility, encloses the body in a biodegradable cocoon surrounded by organic material such as straw and wood chips. Over a 40‑day period, natural bacteria break down the remains, producing nutrient‑rich soil that families may take home or inter in a natural graveyard, subject to local rules.Metz believes the model will spread across Europe, noting that his centre is currently the only one on the continent authorised to perform terramation. Capacity remains limited, only seven cocoons are operational today, and the method requires careful monitoring, including twice‑daily rocking of the cocoon to accelerate decomposition.

Hedgehog's analysis places aquamation at 118 kg CO₂ per body, slightly better than a traditional burial but still higher than the 45 kg estimated for electric cremation. Terramation emerges as the most climate‑friendly option, at just 47 kg CO₂, closely followed by natural burial in protected areas, which can be as low as 40 kg when biodegradable materials are used.

"How climate‑friendly a funeral really is depends on many local factors," warned Katrien Schaubroeck, a philosopher at Antwerp University who studies sustainable death‑care practices. She cited variables such as whether a cremation oven is already heated for other purposes, the provenance of gravestones, and ambient temperatures that affect composting rates.

For most citizens, the choice of final rite remains driven by personal or religious sentiment rather than carbon accounting. Schaubroeck observed that people tend to select the element, fire, water or earth, that resonates emotionally. Yet the growing visibility of low‑emission options may gradually shift public expectations, especially as climate‑related costs increasingly appear on household bills.

Industry observers note that the shift could also impact ancillary markets. Traditional coffin manufacturers, stone masons and crematorium operators may need to adapt to a diversifying demand landscape. At the same time, new service providers, from aquamation equipment firms to composting facilities, could create niche employment opportunities, provided regulatory frameworks keep pace.

European policymakers are watching the developments closely. The European Commission's recent Green Deal roadmap includes a call for member states to assess the environmental impact of all public services, funerals included. If national governments adopt clearer standards for emissions reporting in the death‑care sector, consumers could soon be presented with carbon labels alongside price lists, enabling more informed decisions.

Nevertheless, challenges remain. Scaling up terramation will require investment in specialised infrastructure and clear guidelines on soil use, while aquamation faces questions about the disposal of chemical residues and the energy source for heating. Both methods also need to address cultural acceptance; many families may view the idea of turning a loved one's remains into garden soil as unsettling.

As Europe grapples with the broader task of decarbonising its economies, the funeral industry offers a micro‑cosm of the trade‑offs between tradition, technology and environmental stewardship. Whether the emerging practices become mainstream will depend on how quickly legislation, market capacity and public attitudes align.
