Great Britain's Amy Hunt, Jeremiah Azu, Dina Asher-Smith and Zharnel Hughes after winning gold in the 4x100m relay

Amy Hunt and Dina Asher-Smith have entered the European Championship history books after helping Great Britain win gold in the mixed 4x100m relay on Sunday night.

Hunt became the first athlete to win FOUR gold medals at a single European Athletics Championship.

Meanwhile, Dina Asher-Smith's eleventh medal made her the most decorated athlete in European Championships history.

Great Britain finished second behind Italy in the competition with nine gold, eight silver and two bronze medals.

The Great Britain mixed relay team made up of Asher-Smith, Hunt and 100m and 200m silver medallists Jeremiah Azu and Zharnel Hughes ran the 100m in 39.97 seconds, a European record time.

Amy Hunt, who was the final runner in the team, added the gold to her other victories in the 100m, 200m and women's 4x100m, making her the first athlete to win four golds at one championship.

"I am over the moon. I think to finish it off with some of my best friends in the sport is incredible," Hunt told BBC Sport.

The mixed relay gold also elevated Dina Asher-Smith to further GOAT status as she becomes the most decorated athlete in European Championships history, overtaking Poland's Irena Szewińska.

Georgia Hunter Bell also won gold in the 1500m, bringing the last day of the 2026 European Championships in Birmingham to an incredible end.

Britain & NI came second in the medal table of the 2026 European Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

The host nation was beaten by just one gold medal by Italy, who won 10.

Great Britain won nine gold, eight silver and two bronze medals.

Alongside Dina Asher-Smith and Amy Hunt's history-making achievements, two other athletes had a record-making championship.

Matthew Hudson-Smith won his third European 400m title and fifth European gold to become the most decorated male athlete in the history of the championships.

Zharnel Hughes's two golds means he becomes Britain's most successful male athlete with six golds.
