Three Devon charities are getting a share of £600,000 from the will of an Exmouth hotelier.

Josie Hall died aged 71 in 2009, leaving her estate between Exmouth Hospital League of Friends, Hospiscare and Devon Air Ambulance.

She made her money running the Royal Beacon and Alliston House hotels in Exmouth for 30 years but had no immediate family.

She was also a former captain of ladies at East Devon Golf Club.

Exmouth League of Friends chairman Mavis Prideaux, who knew Josie for 63 years, said: "We started school at the same time and played golf and tennis together.

"Sadly her son Julian died and she had no immediate family so she wanted to help as many people as she could.

"She always took a keen interest in our work and all this money will mean we can continue it."

Her cousin David Lockwood said: "I am only too delighted to carry out her last wishes. Her heart was in the right place."
