Fans Are About to Hear Why Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt’s Son Maddox Dropped ‘Pitt’ From His Last Name

As many know by now, almost all of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s kids have dropped “Pitt” from their last names, instead having their last names be Jolie. And now, fans are set to know why one of them did it.

Now, Angelina and Pitt have six children together: Maddox Jolie, born in Aug 2001; Pax Jolie, born in Nov 2003; Zahara Jolie, born in Jan 2005; Shiloh, born in May 2006; and twins Knox and Vivienne Jolie, born in July 2008. 

And in case you missed it, Maddox filed paperwork in May 2026 to legally become Maddox Chivan Jolie, according to Us Magazine. In court documents obtained by InTouch Weekly, it seems Maddox will head back to court on September 14 to give his reasons for dropping “Pitt.” (This will mark 10 years since the infamous plane incident, to the day.)

While we know he and his mom, Angelina, are the sweetest mother-son duo, he and Brad’s relationship has been strained for some time now.

Brad reportedly got into an altercation with Maddox on a private plane in 2016, where he allegedly choked Maddox, poured wine on his kids, and abused Angelina in front of the six children. Maddox has never spoken about the incident, but back when he was gearing up for college, Maddox was asked by paparazzi if Brad was going to visit him in college. “I don’t know about that, what’s happening,” he replied.
