FC Barcelona coach Hansi Flick provided updates following a commanding 5-0 debut victory over Elche in the 2026/2027 season opener. A primary concern is Gavi's right knee injury, which forced him off before halftime. Flick stated an MRI is needed but noted the midfielder seemed better after clutching the knee that has undergone two previous surgeries. Despite Raphinha's double and other attackers' strong performance, Flick plans to discuss with Deco whether a new number 9, like Julian Alvarez, is still necessary. He lauded captain Raphinha's intensity and leadership. Flick also clarified Alejandro Balde's absence from the squad, explaining he advised Balde to take time to clear his mind due to personal matters, refuting transfer speculation. Barcelona's next challenge is against Athletic Club.

FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick gave an update on Gavi’s injury and also addressed the number 9 situation after his side showed no lack of goals during a 2026/2027, 5-0 debut thrashing away at Elche.

Furthermore, the manager was asked about Alejandro Balde’s future at the club.

Starting alongside Marc Bernal, Gavi had to be brought off before half time and was replaced by Pedri.

Culers were particularly concerned that the Spain international appeared to clutch the right knee he’s had two surgeries on, causing him to miss months of football.

Interviewed post-match, Flick couldn’t offer much but provided somewhat of an update.

“We have to wait to see about the blow he received on his right knee. But it seems that he was better [after the match]. We will have a look, an MRI will have to be done,” Flick said.

With Raphinha scoring a double and providing an assist, while another goalscorer in Karim Adeyemi and two assist servant Anthony Gordon can also play up front, it begs the question as to whether Barca really need to try and land Julian Alvarez or another striker.

“We’ll have to talk to Deco. We have to do what’s best and it’s going to be next week,” Flick said. “We are happy with the fantastic start we have had, it gives us confidence. I’m happy with the 5-0 and the three points.”

More specifically about captain Raphinha, Flick remarked: “Rafa is the player who for me is a good example of intensity… When he does it, the rest follow him. That’s a captain. He’s a captain."

Amid reports he has decided to leave the club, Alejandro Balde being left off the squad list for Elche was taken by many as a sign that the La Masia full back is headed for pastures new.

“No, I’m not asking him to leave. This morning I felt there was something wrong with him. I spoke to him and said: 'At this moment, I have this feeling, and I think it’s best for you to clear your mind, sort out your thoughts, and then we’ll talk again tomorrow.’ And he agreed as well. He agreed to it because there are so many things going around in his head, and that’s why he’s not here,” Flick clarified.

FC Barcelona are next in action on Thursday, when hosting Athletic Club at the Spotify Camp Nou.
