As a leading campaigner for improved services, Lady Carol Kidu outpolled 25 other candidates in the seat of Port Moresby’s south, in Hare Village, to become the first woman MP in PNG Parliament since 1982. Her election victory came after four days of counting.

Kidu was the only female Member of Parliament in the 2002–2007 and 2007–2012 National Parliaments, and served as Minister for Community Development under Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare from 2002 until 2 August 2011, and as Opposition Leader from 15 February 2012 until her retirement from politics in July 2012.

Lady Kidu's late husband, Sir Buri Kidu, was PNG's highly regarded Chief Justice for 13 years.
